Above the Noise: O Canada, When Blessings Become a Right
As I write this blog, Canada Day is just around the corner. Living outside Canada for many years has given me a broader perspective on the blessings we enjoy as Canadians. I was born in Canada, yet both my father and father-in-law came to Canada from other countries seeking a better life, and they found it. Canada is still the objective for many seeking better opportunities for themselves and their families.
One of the stanzas in our national anthem says, “God keep our land glorious and free.” We recognize that our blessings in Canada are from God, and we pray that He continues to bless and keep us. Or do we? Our country and our culture have changed significantly since our National Anthem was written. The words were penned by Adolphe-Basile Routhier to music composed by Calixa Lavallée as a French-Canadian patriotic song for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day celebration, first performed on June 24, 1880.
Sadly, the blessings we enjoy and recognize as coming from God have been replaced by what many see as rights. Society's voices cry out, "You deserve it. You are entitled to it. It is your right!” God is left out of the picture, replaced by cries for political and economic equity, conformity, and celebration of changing cultural and social mores, along with the belief that the government owes us something. So how do we respond when blessings are replaced with rights?
First, we must recognize God as the owner of all things. That which He entrusts to us is a blessing, unmerited, and given as a gift to us. Let us not forget God in every aspect of our lives. We have no right to these things, including our freedoms; they are blessings.
Secondly, let us use our blessings as stewards to bless others. Let us use the material, financial, and other resources to expand the kingdom of God. Let us support our local church, meet the needs of those in distress and suffering, and support missions and other Christian ministries and causes that lead people to Jesus.
Thirdly, pray for Canada! Yes, there are many problems in our society; corruption and injustice abound, and of that, there is no doubt. However, as followers of Jesus, we are commanded to pray for our civic leaders, not just those we like, agree with, or are seemingly favourable to us as Christians. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tell us, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
Finally, let us celebrate Canada! Whether you were born here, emigrated, or came as a refugee, you are welcome here; you belong! Canada is a great country. Let us recognize and celebrate the freedoms and blessings we have. Let us pray for God's intervention in our civic leaders. Let us use our blessings not as rights but as opportunities to bless others in Jesus’ name!
Happy Canada Day!
